<title>DO THE WORK: Your daily check-in</title>

<description>I sketched out the Bomb Queen vol. 7 cover art for Diamond Previews (due to Image Comics on April 10th).

I'll finish it tonight and scan it in and color it... however, I am concerned that she looks like she's pulling a goatse in your face.

<title>Read Any Good Comics Lately?</title>
<link>http://www.panelandpixel.com/forum/?webtag=PANELANDPIXEL&amp;msg=2590.1</link>
<description>I'm working my way through a tall stack of tpb's that I picked up at c2e2. The latest volume of Walking Dead was as awesome as ever. But I was disappointed with the final volume of Ex Machina. I'd always defended the book as a West-Wing style political drama that had superhero elements, but in the final few volumes the superhero stuff picked up (alternate realities, other costumed villains) and I think it lost some of what made it special for me.

I liked that the book ended (SPOILER ALERT) with Mayor Hundred as vice president, however, although that would make him a Republican rather than a kooky independent. Still, it's a natural arc for the character.

Next up from that stack are Chew vol's 2 and 3.

<title>Captain Miracle - pages preview (3/27)</title>
<link>http://www.panelandpixel.com/forum/?webtag=PANELANDPIXEL&amp;msg=2602.1</link>
<description>Because I use more than one computer to draw on, I keep all my work in progress in DropBox. I also have the DropBox app on my iPod Touch, which has a thumbnail view that provides a really handy way to visualize the book so far. Here's most of Captain Miracle as of last night:

One handy thing about this is that it brought to my attention the fact that my colorist had used the same purple for the SFX in the not-Lex-Luthor scene as is the later not-Black-Adam scene. Since they're completely different kinds of powers being used, I want them to be different colors, so I'm changing the not-Lex-Luthor pages.

<description>Another reference set came up in my feeds today that I thought I'd share. They're all criminal portraits from the 20's in Australia. Seems these all come from the archives of the Historic House Trust in Australia, I included a link for them as well, some amazing photos in that archive.

<description>If anyone's wondering the links that Jason posted up thread still work. I bought using the windows-download link a few days ago and got it for 100 bucks.

I just bought a wide format printer so I'm going to try out a new workflow using MS for panel setups, roughs and balloon placement and doing all my inks/lettering by hand. Hopefully it will speed up my overall workflow a bit.

<title>Lettering: Useful Stuff</title>
<link>http://www.panelandpixel.com/forum/?webtag=PANELANDPIXEL&amp;msg=2560.1</link>
<description>I mentioned this in email but for other peoples benefit here's the basic procedure.

It's ctrl+shift+f, in there you can edit the size of the stroke and then basically follow the same procedure as the website outlines. Seems to work perfectly, you can arrange each of the letters how you want by first clicking on them with the edit paths by node (f2) tool and then moving them with the select arrow (f1) Then when you're done arranging they stick back together and you can copy, paste, change the stroke and colors and move one on top of the other.

<title>ELECTRIC (updated 3/11)</title>
<link>http://www.panelandpixel.com/forum/?webtag=PANELANDPIXEL&amp;msg=2496.1</link>
<description>Now that my time is freeing up a bit again (still finishing work on &#38;quot;War of the Ghosts,&#38;quot; but that's 90 percent there), I've gone back to tweaking &#38;quot;Electric.&#38;quot; I'm looking at artists again and thinking that since I'm going to SDCC anyway, it would be nice to have an 8-page sampler ready for then in case I'm able to convince an editor to meet with me for 5 seconds.

Either way, I had a sort-of epiphany the other day about doing this as a series. I had a concept, but no notion of how day-to-day (or issue-to-issue) conflicts would play out. Yes, I had a growing cast of characters and a &#38;quot;point a&#38;quot; and &#38;quot;point b,&#38;quot; but no way to get from the one to the other.

Then I realized (why it took so long, I dunno) that I'm already dealing with organized crime, why not incorporate a crime drama structure to the storytelling? Maybe not to the minute details of a procedural (nor the formulaic aspect), but at least address the elephant in the room. Plus, it occurred to me that the 8-page sequence I wrote as a sampler would more likely come in mid-story, not as an opener. Yes, I wanted to drop the reader right into to the action, but I still needed something to tie it all together.

Well, my second &#38;quot;ah-ha&#38;quot; moment came when I realized a lot of elements from an unused project I was working on with Danny McDaid could fit into the &#38;quot;Electric&#38;quot; world, providing even more structure (I don't want to say anything specific about the other project other than it would have been an IP clearance nightmare, but was otherwise really f*cking cool).

So today, I sketched out a new pass at a first issue that introduces a lot of supporting characters and situations before the protagonist, Jake Peters, even hits the stage mid-story. There are prostitutes and inspectors and pimps and murders and heroism and shady government organizations, and ...

I realized my original pitch of &#38;quot;Harry Potter meets Shoot 'Em Up&#38;quot; has now become &#38;quot;Joss Whedon's Angel meets Law &#38;amp; Order: Criminal Intent meets Batman.&#38;quot; Hoo boy.
